[AiRV Podcast] Mike Maycock

Roanoke area musician and guitar instructor, Mike Maycock joins me for a chat on his background and other random topics. A genuinely kind and laid-back guy, Mike and I go back many years. It’s a pleasure to share his skills and insights.

A seasoned veteran of the southwest Virginia band circuit, Mike has been directly affiliated with many bands including Presence, Blind Decadence, Full Tilt, Deja Voodoo, Nice Day for Something, Stone Groove, Laughing Sam’s Dice, Stickman, The Thrillbillyz, The Thomas Wilson Orchestra, The Mike Mitchell Band, Monkey Fuzz, Runaway Jones, The Jambusters, The Scrooge band and indirectly with the Lazy Man Dub Band.

In addition to his long-time teaching position as a guitar instructor with Kelley’s Music in Roanoke, Virginia, Mike holds a B.S. in Business & Economics and MBA degrees from Radford University and works by day with Goodwill Industries of Valleys. He resides with his wife and family in the Grandin area of Roanoke Valley.

Dr. Sheldon Johnson | Saxophone Intensive (SMI)

Kicking-off a new series entitled Arts in the Roanoke Valley (AiRV), join us for a glimpse into the lives and inspiration of everyday folks like you and me, people whose stories are yet to be told. The passion and high standard of professional saxophonist and Radford University instructor Dr. Sheldon Johnson is certainly no exception, and his outstanding effort in developing the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra’s Saxophone Intensive program with the annual RSO Summer Music Institute.

Mr. Johnson is currently the saxophone instructor at Radford University in Radford, Virginia, having previously taught at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University, a Master of Music degree from Bowling Green State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of South Carolina. His saxophone teachers include David Jacobsen, Frederick L. Hemke, John Sampen, Bryson Borgstedt, and Clifford Leaman. Read more
